This past weekend, I escaped the house to meet some local bloggers*. It is such a rare experience for me to be able to get out of the house without kids, and without a set time-line for return, that I found I was almost giddy. Or maybe I was totally giddy.
Whatever…I had an awesome time.
It was good I had a great time while out and about, because when I arrived home, still high from my freedom, I was greeted by my husband who told me that K had had a “minor accident” and had a “slight bruise” on his eye. He explained that K had fallen off the step, bumped his face on the corner of his small breakfast table, proceeded to cry himself to exhaustion, and was currently taking a nap.
My husband told me all of this in his usual nonchalant, shoulder-shrug kind of stance, so I wasn’t worried. K is a highly active child and I expect a scrape or two will come his way from time-to-time. The fact that K cried himself to exhaustion also didn’t ring any alarm bells because he has lately been testing out his dramatic acting skills and regularly works himself up into a crying fit over all manner of things.
(For example, this past week he threw himself onto the rug in sobs. When questioned on what was wrong, he told me it was because “Mickey Mouse is HUGE!” I have no idea where he came up with that or why it would upset him. We are not planning a trip to Disneyland, he has never been to Disneyland, and as far as I know he hasn’t had any traumatic Mickey Mouse occurrences. Random fit, random subject.)
After changing into my mom uniform of yoga pants and a t-shirt, I went in to see K.
This is not a slight bruise
What I saw was not a “slight bruise” but a gash actively leaking pus, and a very swollen eye. He looked terrible and this started a semi-heated conversation between my husband and myself about if K should of been taken to the emergency room.
My husband thought not and since hours had passed by the time I saw K, I reluctantly agreed that too much time had passed for stitches. We decided to clean his eye and used steri-strips to close the wound.
After much crying, and hugging, and crying (K is not a fan of alcohol swabs), he started to perk up and act his normal exuberant self.
Keeping him from throwing himself face-first onto the couch has been the trickiest part over the past couple of days. His wound seems to be healing slowly and I just hope he isn’t left with a big scar under his eye.
I feel tempted to ask who would of taken their kid to the ER but that seems to be a bit nasty of me. So here I am not asking that.

No, that is not a small scrape. Poor kiddo! Jules had a huge whopper of a black eye and I felt so bad. How fun you got to meet so many people…bloggers!
Gah. Men
If it helps, they use steristrips rather than stitches most of the time these days anyways
Oh, poor kiddo! I’m not answering that question by not saying I probably would’ve gone to the ER…
I hope he heals quickly! It is so difficult to see the little ones hurt.
I’m glad you had a fun day with bloggy friends, though. How fun!
Oh my, the poor little guy! Hope he’s recovering quickly.
If it makes you feel any better, my Hubs would’ve done the exact same thing. Honest!
It was so much fun meeting you on Saturday! We’ll have to get together again another time I’m over in the big city. And I’m following you now too (can’t believe I wasn’t before)
OUCH! Get ice on that! Oh these children give us heart attacks!!!
Yikes! Poor little guy. Those are the most unnerving – I always imagine someone losing an eye. “It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye!” I also say things like “Get down from there, you’ll break your neck!” Original, no?
Glad you were able to get out for some mommy time. Poor little dude, I hope that clears up and he is okay. My hubby and I always get into joking fights about whose watch the kids will get hurt on. Not on my watch we each say. It happens, nothing you can do.
Poor little guy and honestly, I wouldn’t have gone to the emergency room since the bleeding stopped, maybe if you are concerned in a few days call your pediatrician. How exciting meeting fellow bloggers!!
That is not a slight bruise, the poor thing looks awful. I probably wouldn’t have taken him to the ER, though, especially if he was acting alright. Still, I would have been a little peeved.
OMG that poor little man! Hope he is feeling better. But what fun you had at the meet up! I would love to do one but everytime I have a plan to connect….the hubs is out of town working. Sigh….what fun and what a surprise when you got home. I could imagine the “heat” in that convo.
It was so great to meet you!
I am terribly sorry to hear about K. Poor little guy. I hope that he’s feeling much better soon.
(And I know you didn’t ask, but yeah, we would have gone to the ER. I took my daughter once for a smaller gash on her cheek. When it’s on their face you want to minimize any scarring.)
That must have been fun (meeting the local bloggers)!
We live very far from the nearest hospital, and whereas given the number of times we rushed there we should have camped out in the parking lot for all these years, for “slight bruises” I’ve also resorted to steri-strips.
Mickey Mouse is HUGE! omg – very funny. But not funny. I hope K is feeling better. I fear those gashes will be big part of my future. Oh and thanks for the shout out. It was really amazing and strange to meet everyone IRL
I hope he’s feeling much better now. Poor little guy!
That would NOT have been a great “welcome home”. I hope he feels better soon! Just think….he’ll have a scar that will make him “dashing” when he’s older.
