In My Mother’s Kitchen is a collection of recipes inspired by generations of great cooks in Trish Magwood’s family. Trish Magwood, who you may remember as the host of the television show party dish, won the James Beard Foundation Book Award for her first cookbook, dish entertains.
The recipes in In My Mother’s Kitchen are comforting and delicious and easy to make to boot. They’re something quite homey and nostalgic about many of them, while still being a little healthier than what we might remember eating as kids.
The cookbook arrived at my house a few days before Christmas and it sat out on the counter for the entire season. Many, many fingers browsed through the pages of In My Mother’s Kitchen, and everyone who saw it agreed that it’s a beautiful book.
The hardcover book is packed with almost 250 pages of wonderfully simple food that still delivers flavour punch. I have made few of the recipes so far, including the Mulligatawny Soup and Sweet Marie Bars that my family had for lunch today, and everything that I’ve tried has turned out well.
The photographs in the book are gorgeous. Just take a look at the cover image and you have an idea of what you’ll get. My only wish is that there would be a photo for every recipe. By my estimates, there is a photo for every second recipe, which is pretty good, but I am a visual person when it comes to choosing food to make so a few more pictures wouldn’t hurt.
Many of the recipes in In My Mother’s Kitchen feature fresh produce, and I am greatly looking forward to the summer when I can try out the recipes with vegetables fresh from the farm. I think they’ll be spectacular.
In My Mother’s Kitchen is a great cookbook to give or receive as a gift, but it’s also one of those special cookbooks that I think you should treat yourself to as well. You won’t be disappointed.

Disclosure: I received a copy of In My Mother’s Kitchen for the purposes of this review. All opinions in this post are my own.

Does it have much in the way of vegetarian recipes? That’s always my barometer.

I wouldn’t describe this as a vegetarian cookbook as the main dishes are mostly meat, chicken, or fish. I just looked and the meat section takes up about 50 pages, but the whole book is around 250 pages. There are quite a lot of veggie dishes in there, but the main stuff usually has meat in it.

If I was ever going to buy myself another cookbook, it would be this. And I’m all about the photos too.
