Mama Hugged Her Babies and Then Their Heads Popped Off

I always love my kids. Lets get that straight right out of the gate. But there are moments when I LOVE my kids and there are moments when I’d rather that they stay locked outside in the yard for an hour or six.

Today was a good day. A day where my kids got home from school (or woke up from a nap depending on which kid we’re talking about) and they played.

And they played.

And they fought a little…but very quietly…and it didn’t require my involvement to shut it down so it doesn’t count as a problem.

And then they played some more. Right up until dinner.

They played for three hours straight, people. THREE HOURS! Yes, that deserves all caps.

I wanted to rise up and take my possibly still contagious self into the playroom and gather my young brood to my bosom and hug and squeeze their little smooshie faces until their heads popped off.

But I didn’t.

Because Mama knows you never disturb the kids when they’re playing quietly. Never ever.

  3. My kids play with each other, too. For about 5 minutes, then someone starts crying. So whatever you gave your kids to make them get along, I need some.

  6. Don’t you just love those days? My kids have always been close and don’t fight much – although now they are beginning to get differences of opinion. But these don’t last long and they go right back to playing together. My brother and I didn’t get along until I moved out…and that scared me when I had kids. Thankfully we are not repeating that part in our house. Hope you feel better soon.

cherish those moments..right?! my kids can be mean to each other in the house..but on the playground if someone is mean to their sibling..watch out..then when they grow up they are friends for life…
did any of your kids ever get a dandelion and say. “mommy had a baby but her head popped off;” and then deaf head the flower!!

I always relish those rare days! Yesterday afternoon was like that for us in our house – except the girls were playing alone in their rooms. Hope you feel better soon and get a few more days of quiet play time!

Theo had a little girl friend, aged 4, over the other day and they played for 2.5 hours straight with maybe one “interference” by me. I cleaned the kitchen, made dinner, paid the property taxes, did some tweetage, read some blog posts! It was CRAZY.

Amen to not disturbing them when they’re playing quietly – not to take a picture, not to tell them how great they are, and not to hug them till their heads pop off. Because that is a moment you will never get back if you do. Lilah has finally started playing on her own for stretches of time I consider to actually be useful. I’ve tried sneaking up on her with the camera, but that ALWAYS backfires. Now I’ve learned my lesson and not disturbing her has become a Sacred Rule.
