In Animals United, a severe drought in the African Savannah leaves the animals desperate for water. Billy, a meerkat, and his friend Socrates, a lion, decide that they must team up to find a water source to save their friends. As they journey toward their goal, they meet up with a motley crew of animals that are all searching for new homes after their homes have been destroyed by various man-made disasters.
One of the animals Billy meets up with is Charles the rooster. He knows where water is but when the animals reach the water source, they learn that humans have dammed the river in order to supply energy for a luxury resort.
Eventually, the animals manage to break the dam but before that happens, they are hunted and tormented by the hotel’s head of security. In fact, there are a few scary bits in the film, including a scene where one of the lions is shot and killed by a hunter.
Everything turns out okay in the end (except for that poor lion) and my five-year-old wasn’t overly upset by the film. My three-year-old, on the other hand, felt it was a bit much and left the room (the benefit of watching movies at home instead of the theatre). I wasn’t able to watch the entire movie as I was completing a website design for a client, however my husband watched it with the kids and told me he thought the movie was a little heavy-handed in some places but was “pretty good” and “suited for ages five and up”. The letter grade you see below, is his rating, but it seems like it was an entertaining film and I know my son thought it “was good”.
Final Grade: B-
